Rescue Story

Note: Titan has had preliminary training (2 weeks with our trainer)

Titan, formerly known as Monarcas, escaped his holding area on August 11, 2024, and was discovered wandering in the Golden Gate Estates area of Collier County. Concerned citizens alerted local authorities, who arrived at the scene, loaded this emaciated horse onto their trailer, and took him to the Sheriff’s impound.

The condition of this horse was shocking—many described him as just a skeleton with skin stretched over his body. When we were contacted about accepting this very sick horse into our rehabilitation program, we didn’t hesitate; we knew he desperately needed help, and we eagerly agreed to take him in.

Sheriff’s deputies and detectives located the owners of the horse, Diego Alex Trevino Garza (43 years old) and Elisa Godinez (38 years old). They told investigators they had owned ‘Monarcas’ since his previous owners moved away, estimating the move to be around August or September 2023. Thankfully, both Garza and Godinez were arrested and charged with a felony for the horrific mistreatment/neglect of Monarcas over the year.

We have worked closely with CCDAS over the years and they trust us to take in the critical cases and get these horses on the road to recovery. On August 28, 2024, officers from CCDAS brought this severely emaciated horse to South West Florida Horse Rescue, Inc. to begin his rehabilitation. We were prepared for him; he had a barn and a paddock all to himself, allowing him to settle in and learn that not all humans are unkind. After hosting our online Name Game, we welcomed our new horse, Titan, to the SWFHR herd.

We are very proud of our amazing team here at SWFHR, from our long-time veterinarian Doc Shiver to our talented farriers, our dedicated team of volunteers, and our most appreciated and generous supporters!
