Ellie

From Tina: We were contacted by the Hendry County Sheriff’s Department regarding a mare in need of rescue. I met with the Sergeant on the property on September 30, 2024, and spoke with the owner who agreed to surrender her horse to the Rescue. It was late in the day, so we scheduled to return the following day, October 1, 2024, to load her up and bring this sweet mare to safety.

She looked into the cab of the truck with despair in her weary eyes. I promised her that I would be back first thing the next day to pick her up. As I said those words, tears began to roll down my cheeks, and I cried all the way home, the image of her sad eyes etched in my mind.

The next day, we contacted the Sergeant, and agreed on a time to meet. We hooked up the trailer and headed out to “keep a promise.” When I saw her standing in the yard, the first thing I said was, “See? I told you I would be back.”

After months of rehabilitation, our precious Ellie is now thriving under the care of South West Florida Horse Rescue, Inc. While she has medical issues that qualify her as a ‘sanctuary’ horse, we will always honor our promise to keep her safe and well-cared-for for the rest of her life.
