Rescue Story
On June 24, 2026, South West Florida Horse Rescue, Inc. was contacted by Collier County Animal Services regarding a mare in need of rescue. After a detailed phone conversation with the Sergeant, we agreed to take her in, stipulating that she required a negative Coggins test before arrival due to not having a quarantine paddock available at the time. We were informed that the mare was unapproachable and had previously injured her owner; however, we emphasized our experience in rehabilitating fearful, reactive horses. We strongly suggested that they catch the horse and move her to a more suitable location to make it easier for the veterinarian to pull her Coggins. The Sergeant subsequently coordinated with CCSO Agricultural officers to facilitate her transport.
On June 29, 2026, we were notified that a foster barn and a donor for the Coggins test had been secured. On July 1, 2026, the CCSO transported the little horse to her foster location, and on July 9, 2026, Dr. Harvey performed a farm call to collect blood for the Coggins test, though no further examination or imaging was conducted at that time.
On July 22, 2026, Sgt. David Estes transported her to SWFHR.
Soon after her arrival, we started the Name Game not only to give this little girl a proper name but also to raise the much-needed funds for her intake expenses. She is now known as Anya! She has settled in well, and we are optimistic about her future.
